Extreme 270 combs

Post by Ryan » Wed Feb 03, 2021 5:58 pm

Hi Brendan,

I’ve been playing a bit of Irish music on the blues harp for awhile and am just now cobbling together a bunch of chromatics in various configurations in order mess about with something new. I put together a few 260s with the lower slide configurations and recently got ahold of a few Super Chromatics in D and G to mess about with... thinking I’d tune them up and make a few of your slide diatonic configurations. Need to get a few 270 combs and curious if you are still making the extreme version of your printed combs. I have a few of your advanced 260 combs and they are great just curious how the other option plays...

Over the years I’ve purchased your blues harp book, Irish music on a c chromatic and Irish music on D/G chromatics. Curious if the Advanced Book you reference is available.

Incidentally, I have 3 of your slip slider harps (including the original iteration) and really love them.

Thanks for all the great innovations.

Cheers Ryan

Thanks for the message Ryan. Glad you're enjoying some of my creations 🙂

We discontinued the Extreme version of the 270 comb because:

1. The main positive effect of reducing comb chamber volume happens in the top 3-4 holes. The Advanced is similar to the Extreme in that zone. Lower down I couldn't hear much difference; if anything, the sound was a bit 'thinner' on the Extreme due to the reduced chamber volume.

2. It's impossible to insert a reed lifter from the front on the Extreme comb, to adjust blow reed gaps.

3. We're now getting the 3d printing outsourced and wanted to reduce options (colours, shapes), to avoid having parts sitting around unsold. The quality of the printing is better, however.

Sounds like you're serious into your Irish playing! Send us a clip when you have something you're pleased with 🙂

Since I also love Irish music I made a special one for my amusement :)

It is a slide Irish diatonic in D so by pressing the slide you go to next note on the scale (except the B going to a D). Wanted to share a picture but I can't from the the mobile.

It was originally in C so I raised the pitch by adding solder to the base of the reeds instead of removing material from the tip, which can be a problem specially on the upper end. It is holding up pretty well!
