Diminished Tuning Another Key

Post by Piro39 » Fri Sep 10, 2021 6:29 pm

Bendan are you planning in the near future to make another key Lucky 13 Diminshed tuning. Besides having one in your labeled key of C it would be useful to have one with the four bent notes either as draw or blow. I don't think any other key would be necessary once you have these 2 harps. I'msure you have thought about this already.

Hi Piro...

If there is sufficient demand in the future it could happen, but not for the immediate future.

It would be easy enough to make other keys a semitone up or down from the present one. Anyone skilled with retuning reeds could do it in about 10-15 minutes. If it's important enough to you I suggest teaching yourself to retune reeds, or pay a customiser to do it. The former is best.

Brendan I've been retuning reeds for years. I'm just feeling a little lazy about retuning 26 reeds and That's what I will probably end up doing. I think it would be good to have the 4 bent notes as the tonic in a blow or draw situation.

Brendan I just received a Lucky 13 diminished tuned harmonica and like it a lot compared to the Seydel that I've had for years. I want to point out a typo that is in the paper that diagrams the different tunings that comes with it. Perhaps you have caught it by now but if not, on the diminished diagram the draw note that should be D is labeled as C all the way up.

I have to agree with you Piro39. In some situations it would be useful to have those notes not as bend only. I have small problems with it when I need an especially rich tone or have to do a lot of short notes in succession. But perhaps it is also a matter of the technique and one can get better at it.

What I also would like is a version that is maybe an octave lower. Especially, some saxophones or other blow instruments often seem to go an octave lower. Usually, I end up playing them an octave higher, but I really like the low-pitched sound.

Yes.

Btw: It would have been better if you would have opened a new thread for this. It has nothing to do with diminished tunings. And those are definitely not very suitable for beginners. That is just my opinion. ;)
