The best glue for valves?

Post by Ren# » Wed May 10, 2023 5:02 pm

Is there any advantage or disadvantage to using Krazy glue over contact cement? I find the Krazy glue dries so fast it is difficult to place the valve in position before the glue sets. What is the amount of time one should leave the glue to cure to max strength for both Krazy glue and contact cement?
Thanks for your insights!

I haven't tried Krazy Glue, but what I use is either viscous (thick) Superglue, or Superglue Gel. It gives you plenty of time to adjust the position of the valve before it sets.

I've used Krazy Glue or othebrsuper glue for a long time. Honestly, on my own harmonicas I still use it, because it sets fast, and I'm usually trying to fix one or two valves and get back to playing quickly.

For chromatics that I do for other people, which will likely require future routine valve changes, I use Aleene's Fabric Fusion.

It takes about 30 minutes to set, so it's slower to work with, (There is a "quick dry" version I'll have to try.) but it's really easy to clean, you can easily trim off excess to ensure nothing interferes with where the comb touches the plates, and you can easily remove it when making future valve changes. If superglue drips into a reed slot it can be a nightmare to get out of there, but it's much easier to clean out the fabric glue.

But if you're careful with the application, and quick and accurate with your valve placement, Krazy Glue works just fine.

That is true. I strongly advice against any kind of customary superglue (Sekundenkleber in German). It is much to inviscide to handle properly.
Since I have tried this the first time, I use the special glue for valves which is sold by Seydel.

It appears a little bit more expensive than superglue at first sight. But it is very economical in use and the leftover does not dry out as fast as superglue.
