Lucky 13 & Embossing.

Post by Lucky13inacg » Sat Nov 17, 2018 2:36 am

Do the Lucky 13's respond well to embossing? I feel the added on lower end could do with a bit of a boost to help quick response. Has anyone experimented or tried it yet? I also just got a G and the hole 1 D is hitting the cover plate and giving the little 'ting' noise most serious harper's will know about. Anyway love these harps and i know now how Brendan says to watch out as they are addictive to play. It's a lot of fun. :D

Embossing is good for any harp. I think the Lucky 13 responds well out of the box, but of course it will be even better with embossing.

Regarding the extra low octave, I recommend you add valves to the first two or three holes, inside and out, especially on the lowest G key. They will do far more than embossing to make these reeds louder, and will reduce the reed swing that is causing the hole 1 A note to hit the lower cover, despite its raised height.

Without valves those reeds swing much more, so more air gets lost. Valving will eliminate air loss through the opposite reed and reduce reed swing, thereby also protecting the reed from excess vibration. Try it, you'll be surprised at the big effect on response and volume. You can leave off the outside valve on hole 3 if you want to bend it.

Thanks Brendan. That's great advice about the valves, i never thought of it. I think i'll do it. Where can i get valves from? I know the big companies make them but i'm talking about the length of them will standard valve's work ok?

Is there anyone in the UK Brendan that can replace reeds on a Lucky 13 if i need it? The guys i see on your site are all abroad. So far in my harp career i've never broken a reed so i'm quite lucky in that sense but i just wondered how i could get a reed replaced. I can do it myself on standard Hohner's etc as i have the tools but i don't have a drill press.

If you can not find anyone in UK, ask Ben Bouman. He is in Helmond, Netherlands.
http://www.benboumanharmonicas.nl/
He does good embossing and customizing on Seydel harmonicas for a reasonable and fair price as well. Maybe you can ask him, if he does embossing on Lucky13 as well. I just do not know, how taxes, customs and costs of shipment will develop in the future concerning Brexit.

Thanks Triona but i've run into a problem with brand new 'Unlucky 13'

I bought a G the lowest key. Had it about a week maybe and was playing it tonight. Vamping away Sonny terry style on the low end and suddenly i noticed it sounded weird like it had went crazily out of tune or something or that one of the reeds was stuck. Hole 1 draw is kaput. After one week! It seems to have went massively flat and i don't know why apart from the reeds are of an appalling quality.

Far eastern made so maybe i should have known. I like the Lucky 13's they are so much fun to play but the quality seriously let's them down. This being one example. I'd send it back but don't want to ship it to China.

Disappointed. I probably won't buy anything again now Brendan. This is how a brand's name get's tarnished by bad/poor quality components.

As I heard, harmonica tunings and setups can be somehow analogized to familiar software when possible.
