PowerCombs

Post by RunBanjoRun »

In 2015 Brendan designed his range of high-performance, 3D-printed harmonica combs, with optimal airflow and small chamber volumes; each one aimed at giving every chamber on every comb its best shape and volume to suit the reeds and their pitch.

Even today in 2023, harmonica companies produce harmonicas with large chambers, resulting in sub optimal performance. Eight years and over 2000 units sold later, and our PowerCombs are still as popular as ever!

Printing of our PowerCombs is now outsourced to a company using high-quality professional 3d printing machines. The Hohner 10 and 12 Hole models also now come with an embedded nut for the frontpiece screws. All combs are currently available in black, red, green and blue colours.

Read about the story of the PowerComb here:

Our PowerCombs are finished in the workshop and are ready to fit, but if you’d like to save money you can also buy the combs raw off the printer and sand and finish them yourself (the PowerParts option).

We have made a series of tech videos showing how to do everything:

I've updated my own 10-hole chromatic with a Power Comb, and retrofitted many other people's 12 and 16-hole chromatics with Power Combs. Everyone loves them! If you're going to replace or repair a broken wooden chromatic comb anyway, going with a Power Comb instead is a no-brainer. Improved playability, better maintenance, longer lasting, and quite affordable!

Now that I've got a more capable 3D printer, I started experimenting. I mostly made jigs and supports to aid in streamlining other tasks, but this time I wanted to convert my Masterharp tuning table with a gasket that would allow me to work on two chromatic reed plates at once, simultaneously playing enharmonic notes that are on different reedplates (even different airflow directions) so that they can be tuned to match one another. That project is ongoing... but along the way, I ended up having to model up a comb for a Larry Adler 16-hole chromatic I was working on.

The existing line of Power Combs isn't compatible with the plastic combed 64s, so I wanted to take the chamber modelling I see on the Power Combs and modify my comb file to include most of those features. So far, I've got something that works. 3D printing has come a long way, and overhangs and bridging that weren't reliable (or even possible) are now very achievable. I'm excited for the future!

Cheers,
Robert Laferriere
